Ben started the 6th grade yesterday at Liberty Creek Middle School. He is in the same building as Claire, but the middle school is located in a separate area and has its own entrance, cafeteria, and gym. He said the middle school classrooms seemed to be more “finished” and that they got the A/C working.

He was excited this morning, but also very nervous. When I dropped him off there was a group of teachers and cheerleaders standing outside to welcome him and show him where to go.

He had two classes and lunch with his friend Oliver, so they stuck together today because neither of them knows anybody else yet. He likes his teachers and has the same math teacher that Claire had in 6th grade. He was impressed by the art teacher and can’t wait to be in his class in the spring and also plans to join the art club. He said there is a “no cussing” rule and that the rumor amongst the 6th graders is that “there are cameras all over the halls listening to make sure you don’t say any bad words”, ha! I don’t know who started this rumor but it seems to be effective so far.

There was a bit of confusion about Ben’s schedule. They handed him a new one when he arrived at school yesterday morning, and he didn’t realized they had flipped his English and math classes around so he followed the old schedule (which I had printed out all nice and neat for him along with a map). He told me “they didn’t call my name on the roll all afternoon” and then later I got an email saying he was counted absent for both those classes. We figured out what happened and I contacted the attendance clerk. Hopefully on Friday he’ll go to the right classes in the right order. He said a lot of the 6th graders were confused and going to the wrong classes, and that one girl didn’t switch at all, she just stayed in the same class all day :-)

After school we went to Starbucks. Both kids are off today for Election Day, but will be at school together starting tomorrow.
