In Maui we rented a condo on Ma’alaea Bay. The kids and I relaxed on the balcony and watched the surfers, and we also swam at the pool.

James went hiking at Haleakalā National Park and Iao Valley State Park and took some beautiful photos.

We also went shopping in Lahaina, and saw the new Buzz Lightyear movie.

Our flight home was a nightmare. We got up early that morning and were supposed to fly from Maui to Phoenix and then on to Nashville. But there was a monsoon in Phoenix that temporarily closed the airport, so we diverted to Las Vegas because we were running out of fuel after just flying over the ocean.

They refueled and serviced the plane and we sat on the tarmac for a couple hours until the Phoenix airport reopened and we were able to fly back there, but by then we had missed our flight to Nashville. The Phoenix airport was chaotic due to the closure earlier. There were no more flights to Nashville that night and all of the ones the next day were full, so Southwest sent us to Denver.

We arrived at the Denver airport at 2am and it was deserted. The kids slept on the floor while James and I called Southwest and stayed on eternal hold until they booked us onto the earliest non-stop flight to Nashville at 5am. When we finally got home this morning we all crashed.
